Reading is such a vital part of successful start for our children in their journey as academic learners and opens doors for so much more in their lives. From their second week of the term in Year R, children learn phonics and at the end of Year 1, this progress is assessed in the Government’s phonics check. Of course, that isn’t the only time it’s checked!! We assess children every 6 weeks to ensure they are on the right progress trajectory and if not, put in keep up and catch up groups to ensure they meet the end of Year 1 milestone.
Since introducing Little Wandle, and before then when we were following our own scheme of work for phonics, our standards have been consistently high which means children are on the path to success in reading right from the very start.
The data in the table below show the % of children passing the phonics check in each of the past 3 years and how the school’s performance compares to national results.
