As they enter ‘big school’ for the first time, our Year R children have a class to themselves. This small number of children enables them to have the very best start to their school journey and get used to the routines and ebb and flow of school life. The class is taught by Miss Kirkham who is ably supported by Mrs Holdich (Mon – Thurs) and Mrs Hanham (Thurs & Fri)
The children in Year R follow the Early Years Curriculum, divided out into half termly themes which is then divided into the 7 areas of learning for Early Years children. In this classroom, you will certainly still see a role play area (themed of course!), water and sand play areas, lots of creative activities but all underpinned by developing writers, readers and mathematicians who are growing in skill level.
Sprat & Winkle’s autumn topic 3 is all about the element of Surprise! This links to work on The Jolly Postman in time for Christmas but without being too Christmas mad, too early! Children learn about the role that the postman plays in bringing news to us as well as looking at more modern methods of communication. Of course, alongside this sits high quality phonics teaching and children’s maths is linked to all things post and surprise driven. Janet & Allan Ahlberg are the focus authors of the topic as they wrote the Jolly Postman and lots of other brilliant books for children. Click on the topic map below to find out more!
